To begin this year’s theme on “True Freedom in Christ,” Jennifer taught an amazing lesson on “The Truth Sets You Free.” The women learned to hope in God and the truth that He has made us a new creature, rather than being hindered by our past. Her first point was to learn true freedom. In our world today, so many women view the Bible as a hindrance and restriction to their lives. They believe the lie that the Bible is a subjective truth in order to appease their fleshly desires. But God’s Word is clear that we should live according to the Word of God that is objective truth (Psalm 119:151-152). The freedom in Christ is the freedom to obey God’s Word which brings true peace and joy. A life apart from God is useless and not truly free because it holds us in captivity to lies, wickedness, and regret.
Her second point was to live in the reality of God’s Word! Oftentimes, we can fall into a defeatist mentality when it comes to habitual sins and purity struggles. But the reality is that there is no temptation that can overcome us because God provides for us the way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). We have been given unmerited grace and freedom with the liberty to choose to resist temptation and live a holy and righteous life.
The third point was to lose the lies and replace them with truth. Jennifer encouraged us with examples of people in the Bible like Paul who once persecuted Christians but was absolved from this guilt through salvation and how he focused on pursuing Christ-likeness instead of being held back by what he had done in the past (Philippians 3:12-16). Also, despite Rahab’s sexual past as a prostitute, she is remembered for her faith (Hebrews 11:31). Jennifer encouraged us with the truth that God ultimately remembers us for our faithfulness and not our past sins because we are a new creature in Christ. Christ stood in our place and died to make us free (1 John 2:1-2). Let us focus on what lies ahead to bring God glory by sharing purity struggles transparently with other sisters and choosing to live a holy life for God!
